La Grande Illusion (The Grand Illusion)

Posted by martinteller on April 16, 2004

Yeah, it was good, but it sure wasn’t all that.  I certainly have little desire to see it again.  I’ve read comments from people who say they found it extremely moving, but I found it too stagey and distant to be moving.  It’s got a nice message, but nothing mind-blowing.  It also seems rather breezily optimistic, hard to believe this is the same guy who did Rules.  Like I said, it was good (definitely makes up for the last couple of Renoirs I’ve seen, Boudu and The River), but not the masterpiece it’s hailed as.  Rating: 7
