The Maltese Falcon

Not particularly impressed with Huston’s directing. Like Sierra Madre, I found it adequate but unremarkable. His screenplay (and Hammett’s story) are excellent, but to me the real attraction here is all the talent onscreen. Bogie is a joy to observe, as always, and the supporting cast is top-notch as well. Mary Astor seems miscast, but you can’t complain about the performances from Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, Elisha Cook, and Lee Patrick. Noir is a genre I haven’t explored nearly enough, but I’m getting in the mood for more. Rating: 8
