When Father Was Away on Business (rewatch)

Posted by martinteller on May 14, 2005

This one just came out on DVD so I wanted to give it another look.  Unfortunately, the DVD sucks.  Non-anamorphic (extra annoying for a subtitled film), slow menus, and the Kusturica interview was mixed so low that my wireless headphones were struggling to pick it up.

What’s important, of course, is the movie.  It’s his second film after Dolly Bell and it’s pretty similar… a look at Communist oppression through the eyes of a family.  I think it’s a good film, but it doesn’t have the comic elements or magic realism that I enjoy in other Kusturicas like Underground, Time of the Gypsies, and Black Cat White Cat.  My previous 8 rating seems a little generous, but 7 seems too low.  Well, I guess I’ll stick with my 8.
