The Chase

Even more pessimistic and nihilistic than Penn’s following feature, Bonnie and Clyde. The goodness of the few decent characters is utterly thwarted by the apathy, corruption, frustration and hatred of a town (and presumably the whole country is being implicated as well) where morality is spiralling down the toilet. Certainly this is partly a reaction to JFK’s assassination and subsequent events, one of which is directly referenced in the film. Marlon Brando is excellent (of course), the rest of the cast is kinda blah. I can’t get into Jane Fonda at all. The direction is somewhat lackluster as well, but the slow burn and build-up of the movie is so intense that it merits a good rating. Rating: 8
