Martin Teller's Movie Reviews

I watch movies, I write some crap

Germany Year Zero

Posted by martinteller on June 6, 2006

Meh.  Of all the overrated Italian neo-realists, I think Rossellini is the most overrated.  Neo-realism doesn’t really push my buttons anyway, but so far Rossellini’s pictures have completely failed to impress me.  Germany Year Zero opens with a long statement about how the film is supposed to make you feel.  So right off the bat I’m annoyed with it.  The music is pretty horrible, and the plotting is insultingly manipulative.  I had to roll my eyes at the creepy pedo Nazi guy.  Other than those things, it wasn’t that bad… the cinematography was decent, at least, especially with all those photogenic bombed-out buildings.  Like I said, though, neo-realism isn’t my bag.  I don’t know if I even like Bicycle Thief that much anymore.  Rating: 6
