Riget (The Kingdom)

Not really a movie, but close enough. A very enjoyable mix of hospital drama (a la “E.R.”, although this predates that show), comedy, and ghost story. The elements are balanced against each other exquisitely, with none taking dominance over the others. I was pleasantly surprised at how engaging every subplot was. Von Trier’s Hitchcock/Serling style comments at the end of each episode were a nice touch, too.
I’ve got to wonder what LVT has against Sweden, since the Swedish character is one of the most despicable bastards I’ve ever seen. Oh well, if he’s bad-mouthing Sweden instead of America this time, at least he’s BEEN to Sweden (presumably). Rating: 9
