War of the Worlds (rewatch)

Another Spielberg movie where a lot of people think the ending is too sentimental and upbeat. The contention is that Robbie couldn’t (or shouldn’t) have survived. It honestly doesn’t bother me. Tom Cruise survives some crazy shit in the first attack by pure dumb luck, with people being vaporized left and right mere inches from him. It’s not so far-fetched to think Robbie could have made it. The real problem is that Robbie is an annoying character. Fuck that kid. Otherwise, I think this is a pretty awesome movie, at least in terms of chills and thrills and technical wow factor. All right, so the character development is weak and the whole “trying to be a good dad” thing feels like an afterthought, but the film does have a way of getting you intensely involved in the action and suspense of the situation. Wonderful effects and sound design and staging. Rating: 8
