Partisans of Vilna

Consistently riveting documentary about the partisan uprising from the Jewish ghetto in the Lithuanian capital of Vilna and their struggles to halt the slaughter of their people. Holocaust movies (even other documentaries) often paint the Jews as helpless and/or clueless sheep being easily led to their doom, so it’s important to remember that there were those who tried to fight back, against overwhelming odds. Their failures are unbearably tragic, and even their successes are extremely minor in the grand scheme of things. The film maintains a good balance of survivor interviews, narration and stock footage, and the inclusion of actual recordings of partisan fight songs is a beautiful tribute to their spirit. One of the better Holocaust docs. Rating: 9
