Martin Teller's Movie Reviews

I watch movies, I write some crap

Rogue Cop

Posted by martinteller on May 15, 2011

A cop on the take finds things get complicated when his little brother is in jeopardy.  Very fine character drama with some riveting scenes, resonant themes of corruption, and strong performances.  Robert Taylor is fantastic in the lead, but the real highlight is George Raft and Anne Francis as the gangster and his moll, in a sadistic relationship reminiscent of The Big Heat.  Some other great supporting roles by Janet Leigh (who gets second billing, despite relatively little screen time), Robert F. Simon and Robert Ellerstein.  The weak link is Steve Forrest in the thankless role of the squeaky-clean younger brother, but otherwise it’s a great cast.  Rowland directs with not much flair, but makes really compelling use of close-ups, particularly when things go sour between Raft and Francis.  Just a solid flick all-around, well worth a look.  Rating: 8
