Southside 1-1000

Unpolished and formulaic, lacking in thematic depth… but has a lot of cheapo charm to it. As a counterfeiting police procedural, it doesn’t live up to T-Men, but there’s a lot of wonderful little details and it just feels right. When you love a genre, sometimes it’s the not-so-great movies that really do it for you. And besides, not-so-great doesn’t mean bad. The only truly subpar aspect of this feature is the often hokey narration, and I’ve heard worse. The performances, dialogue, plotting, photography, music, and uses of locations all have some bright spots. I wouldn’t put this movie among the finest noir, but for a fan it hits the spot. I just wish I could’ve seen a better print, hopefully someone will restore it eventually. Rating: 7
