The Perfect Human

Posted by martinteller on June 6, 2011

In preparation for The Five Obstructions, watching the original short film that serves as its launching point.  I didn’t know at all what to expect, but I was quite pleased with it.  An almost zoological study of two “perfect humans”, done with trademark Scandinavian dry wit.  It raises a lot of intriguing questions (are these “perfect” humans, or “perfectly human”?) and has a lot of enigmatic flair for such a short piece.  I was struck by the immediacy of it: the stark white background, the extreme close-ups, and the heavy emphasis on words like “here”, “this” and “now”.  Cool stuff, it’ll be interesting to see what kind of fun Von Trier has with it.  Rating: 9
