The Color of Pomegranates (rewatch)

Posted by martinteller on January 1, 2012

This might have been a bad day to revisit this film.  I’ve been feeling restless ever since I woke up.  I managed to get through Tokyo Sonata easily enough, but everything else I’ve tried to do has made me antsy.  I watched 20 minutes of Brewster McCloud and was so irritated (which I blame on the movie more than my state of mind, it stinks) I couldn’t finish.  So tackling a film this dense with symbolism, even for the second time, probably requires a more contemplative mood.  And not just dense with symbolism, but symbolism that is extremely culturally specific.  Even on a good day I’d have trouble making heads or tails of it without some sort of reference guide.  I do still think it’s an incredibly unique, fascinating and beautiful film.  But I’m certain I’m not getting nearly everything out of it that I should be.  I’m more of a Shadows of Our Forgotten Ancestors guy.  Rating: Good
