American Psycho

Dumb yuppie black comedy/consumerism satire that takes “obvious” to whole new levels. “Mergers and Acquisitions” / “Murders and Executions”, har de har har. Normally I enjoy composing a scathing review, but I just don’t feel like wasting my time on this one. Whatevs. Rating: Crap

Didn’t realize you hated this one so much! I can certainly see how the consummerism aspect of it – which is, yeah, oh so obvious – can be annoying. It doesn’t feel all that original in the end, does it? But I do think it’s much more interesting on the level of it being about a deconstruction of masculinity via the female gaze – I loved this piece, relative to that theme: http://blogs.suntimes.com/foreignc/2012/03/american-psycho.html I’d be really curious to hear what you think, if you get a chance to read it, and see if it improves your feelings about the film at all.

I think those are good observations and I can see how someone would enjoy that aspect of the film. Doesn’t help me much, though. Maybe I’m being stubborn.

Nah, I don’t think you’re stubborn; your reaction makes sense. I suppose, for me personally, Harron’s take -her female gaze – is refreshing enough for my appreciation to outweigh whatever other problems I might have.
