Dog Star Man

Posted by martinteller on July 13, 2003

I’ve been working through the excellent by Brakhage DVD all week, and saved the longest for last.  The 2nd and 3rd longest on this set (“The Stars Are Beautiful” and “The Act of Seeing With One’s Own Eyes”) were among my most disliked, so I watched Dog Star Man with some trepidation.  I had nothing to fear… this is definitely among my favorite Brakhage works.  There are certainly a pile of nagging questions that arise when watching his films (not the least of which are those which question their artistic value) but that’s the sign of Good Art.  I was really pleased with the majority of this compilation and I hope that Criterion somehow manages to release more of his work.  Rating: 9

Addendum 7/6/12: The Act of Seeing With One’s Own Eyes is now one of my favorites.
