Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii

Posted by martinteller on October 25, 2003

Semi-long story here.  I was a huge mega super Pink Floyd fan for most of my youth, and still consider myself a big fan.  I had all the records.  I saw them twice.  I had the sheet music and the books and the t-shirts and the posters.  But somehow I never got around to seeing this movie.  I don’t know why.  I know I had a bootleg of the soundtrack which cost me like $15 or $20.  Maybe they never had it at the video stores in my neighborhood, but I kind of remember seeing the box.  So, I don’t know.

But now at last, I get to see it.  Sort of.  You see, there are 3 versions of the film.  First was a concert-only film.  Then a couple of years later, they recorded some footage during the Dark Side of the Moon sessions and put that in there.  That’s the version that was on the video release and that just about everyone is familiar with.  But now there’s this godawful “director’s cut”.  This version includes additional interview footage, which is cool.  But it’s also cropped at the top and bottom to provide a more theatrical aspect ratio.  That’s dumb thing #1.  Dumb thing #2 is all the terrible, TERRIBLE computer graphics that were added in.  I mean, this stuff looks really bad.  Fortunately, the 1st version of the movie is on the DVD.  But not the 2nd.  So if you want to see the cool studio footage, you have to sit through the bad version.  Rating: 5 (director’s cut) / 8 (original)
