La Strada

Posted by martinteller on June 19, 2004

I don’t think I’ll ever be a Fellini fan.  I hated Amarcord and I only made it through half of 8 1/2.  This one was significantly better… MUCH better, really.  I loved the “road” that it takes you down.  I do have complaints, though… Giulietta Masina is frequently described as “Chaplinesque” in her role, and I have to agree.  Chaplin instantly came to mind.  Problem is, I don’t like Chaplin.  All that mugging about turns me off.  The other thing is this: I cannot stand dubbing.  It’s an obstacle that I can’t overcome.  When I see obvious dubbing I find it impossible to get into the film.  It’s always there, bugging me, like an itch I can’t scratch.  And since Fellini apparently overdubbed almost all of his films, I’m against him already.  Probably the closest I’ll get to being a Fellini fan is being a Kusturica fan.  But I did like La Strada, for the most part, and will someday give 8 1/2 another chance.  Rating: 7
