Ichi the Killer

Posted by martinteller on January 1, 2005

A gross-out extravaganza in typical Miike fashion.  Unlike Audition, however, this time it was played with a nod and a wink.  And it has to be, because the gore is too over-the-top to take seriously or be genuinely disturbed by (couldn’t help cringing at some parts, though).  I kind of enjoyed the carefree glee of it all, but then the movie became a confusing mess at the end.  I think I got most of it, but I lost track of who the girls were, and I didn’t understand why Ichi was told that the ex-cop was his long lost brother.  Oh well.  Incoherent plotting seems to be a staple of modern Japanese film.  Rating: 6
