Hoop Dreams (rewatch)

Posted by martinteller on July 19, 2005

I haven’t seen this film since it was in theaters ten years ago, and I’d forgotten how excellent it is.  Siskel & Ebert gushed about Hoop Dreams, and rightfully so.  Even at almost 3 hours, you wish it would never end, continuing to follow these boys through all their triumphs and defeats.  The drama on the court is exciting enough, but the film goes much further than that, revealing their academic, personal, economic and family lives.  In fact, one of the most touching scenes doesn’t even involve the boys, but rather the graduation of Arthur Agee’s mother from nursing school.  A really astonishing and riveting movie, and I can’t wait to listen to the audio commentaries (one with the filmmakers, one with Agee and Gates).  Rating: 10
