Serenity

Posted by martinteller on October 9, 2005

Joss Whedon’s short-lived “Firefly” was a sci-fi/western hybrid, and has sometimes been described as what it would be like if Han Solo had his own TV show.  And the “Firefly” film Serenity is what would it be like if Han Solo had his own movie.  In other words, it’s friggin’ awesome.  This is every bit as good as any Star Wars movie, and better than most of them.  I haven’t seen all the “Firefly” episodes (yet) but I never felt like I was lost, nor did I think the movie wasted too much time getting the non-fans up to speed.  It’s remarkably economical storytelling, squeezing in a hell of a lot of action, drama, mystery and comedy into its 2 hour running time.  It’s fast, funny, and sucks you right in.  I laughed, I cried, I wanted more.  The tragedy of Serenity is that it deserves a sequel or two, but probably won’t do enough box office to support one.  Rating: 10
