I know Barbet Schroeder for two things: a pair of films that Pink Floyd did soundtracks for (neither of which I’ve seen yet) and a handful of mediocre American movies.  I wouldn’t have bothered with this one, except lately I’ve been compelled to give all the Criterion Collection DVDs a chance (which is how I ended up watching that awful Jubilee).  I didn’t expect much, but it’s kind of interesting in its approach to gender roles and sexual politics, has occasional sly moments of humor, and the cinematography is quite nice.  Most of the S&M scenes aren’t all that necessary, and they tend to come off like cheesy fetish porn rather than adding any depth to the story or the characters.  Rating: 7
