Defending Your Life (rewatch)

Posted by martinteller on January 30, 2006

I don’t know what it was, but something compelled me to watch this today.  It’s got some funny stuff, but I’m not so into it now.  The romance is really hard to swallow.  Actually, it’s a bit narcissistic of Brooks, even if in a self-deprecating way.  He’s a shallow, nervous loser at life and she’s  confident, giving, nearly a saint… but she falls head over heels for him immediately because he tells a couple of good jokes?  Rating: 7

It’s true. I just can’t buy the romance. The plot is kind of funny, but the sense of injustice would make more sense if the relationship was realistic at all. The least believable Streep performance I’ve seen (of course, I haven’t seen Mamma Mia).

  2. I guess I’d have to go along with that. Even in movies I don’t like (Bridges of Madison County) Streep isn’t the problem. Although I’d say it’s less her performance here than the way the “romance” is written. She’s perfectly charming… there’s just not enough reason to believe she’d be interested in Brooks as more than a fun dinner date.
