The Host

I was pretty excited to see a new monster movie, but this one really didn’t cut the mustard.  The monster was too abstract and undefined to be that scary, there were some wide open plot holes and unanswered questions, and the ending was almost laughably predictable.  I expected better from the director of the astonishing Memories of Murder (whose star Kang-ho Song takes the lead here, a role that doesn’t offer him much to work with).  It looked very good, I liked the moments of black humor and it held my interest for the most part, but overall I felt disappointed afterwards.  Rating: 6
