Vengeance Is Mine

Posted by martinteller on October 2, 2007

I couldn’t help thinking of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer as I watched this.  Both are based on true stories (and both play loose with the facts) about remorseless killers, and neither attempts to explain the psychology of their subjects, each giving only a small glimpse of the events that may have shaped their psychoses.  Each also has a bit of humor to it, and a level of sex and/or violence that is (arguably) gratuitous.  I like Imamura’s film more, though.  The fragmented narrative keeps you on your toes, and I’m intrigued by the social and religious undertones.  There really are no innocents in this movie, almost everyone is indulging one vice or another.  Rating: 8
