Ako (White Morning)

The last of the shorts in Criterion’s Teshigahara package is the most interesting.  All of his work seems to incorporate unusual tricks in the soundtrack, but in this one it’s especially pronounced.  Lots of jarring noise, and one key sequence is underscored entirely by wind.  There’s a lot of new wave influence here (including a direct homage to 400 Blows) but occasionally it’s almost overkill.  More substance and less style would have been nice.  Still, it’s probably the only one of these shorts I would bother to revisit.  Superb photography, particularly the shots from the bakery assembly line.  Rating: 7
