Little Dieter Needs To Fly (rewatch)

Posted by martinteller on January 9, 2008

Since I intend to watch Rescue Dawn soon, I figured it was time to refresh my memory on the original story.  I gave this movie a 6 before, which I now realize is a little harsh, but I still feel something’s not quite great about it.  I did find one specific thing that bugged me: when Dengler shows Herzog his home, and makes a big display out of opening and closing the front door, saying how important it is now for him to be able to do that and that he does it all the time.  It felt off to me, as if he was putting on a show and would never do that if the cameras weren’t rolling.  Surely after 30 years he’d have gotten over the novelty of his freedom.

I realize, of course, this is nitpicking.  It’s just one thing that nagged at me, and I can’t put my finger on the rest.  While Dieter’s story is harrowing, something about the telling of it isn’t engaging to me.  I’m surprised to find myself thinking this, but I’m actually looking forward more to the Hollywood-esque big-name actor recreation of it.  Rating: 7
