Dreams That Money Can Buy

Posted by martinteller on June 12, 2008

A surrealist extravaganza, directed by Hans Richter, but with contributions by the likes of Max Ernst, Fernand Leger, Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, Alexander Calder, and John Cage.  A man gets into the dream business, which serves as a launching point for seven bizarre dream sequences.  The surrealism isn’t entirely limited to the dreams, however, it bleeds over quite liberally into the narrative.  Some of the narration is a little too beatnik, and Calder’s section isn’t that interesting (how long can you look at mobiles?) but otherwise it’s a wild ride punctuated by some really clever and funny moments.  I hope this comes out on a proper DVD some day.  Rating: 9
