Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation

Posted by martinteller on September 12, 2008

If you haven’t heard the story: three kids from Mississippi, over the course of 7 years, filmed a shot-for-shot remake of Spielberg’s Raiders.  The results are amazingly faithful to the original, but more importantly, a testament to their devotion, tenacity, and resourcefulness.  You have to admire their dedication.  The stunts, effects, camerawork, and editing are surprisingly competent, even impressive.  And if some aspects are hilariously sub-Hollywood (a rather pudgy Indiana Jones) or necessary D.I.Y. low-budget sacrifices (a puppy in place of a spider monkey), they are at least charming.  While it’s certainly no substitute for the original, it’s such a giddy romp that it’s definitely worth seeing once.  And it still beats the pants off of Temple of Doom.  Rating: 8
