Take Care of Your Scarf, Tatiana

I’ve yet to see a Kaurismaki movie I didn’t like, but I have to say this one has been the most underwhelming.  It involves two hapless Finnish “rockers” who pick up a pair of Estonian women (including the always enjoyable Kati Outinen) on a road trip.  There are some funny moments, but a lot of the humor seemed particularly aimed at a Finnish audience, so I’m sure I missed a lot.  I felt a Wim Wenders Kings of the Road influence… didn’t they also have a record player in the vehicle?  Although I didn’t connect with the story all that much, the film does sport some rather nice black & white photography, especially in the use of lighting.  Also notable for a fantasy sequence, something I’m sure I’ve never seen before from Kaurismaki.  The deadpan humor, rock ‘n’ roll fixation, and working-class characters appeal to Kaurismaki fanatics, but probably won’t win over anyone else.  Rating: 7
