The New World (rewatch)

Posted by martinteller on November 5, 2008

So overwhelmingly beautiful.  Malick has a gift not only for breathtaking images, but also voice-over which doesn’t so much narrate the story as the feelings behind it.  This film is not just about the compelling facts of the story of Smith and Pocahontas and Jamestown, nor is it just about the meticulous attention to historical detail.  Most of all, it’s about life itself.  It casts a wide net, encompassing several rich emotional themes.  The dual romances complement each other perfectly, building to an ending that is deeply satisfying.  I watched the new “extended cut”, but I don’t recall specific scenes from the theatrical cut well enough to comment on the differences.  I can say that nothing felt superfluous.  Rating: 9
