La pianiste (The Piano Teacher)

Watching this, it occurred to me that very few of my favorite films are about sex, or even have much sex in them.  I wouldn’t say I’m a prude, but the way I feel about other people’s sex lives is the same way I feel about other people’s dreams.  They’re fascinating to the person, who can’t wait to share them with you, but I find them boring.  But, it’s not quite fair to call this a movie about sex.  It’s more about psychology, like most of Haneke’s films.  The interesting part is not that Erika is sexually repressed and has a domineering mother, thus she desires kinky S&M.  The interesting part is what happens when she gets what she wants.  So I wasn’t that into the first 3/4 of the film, but the ending redeemed it somewhat.  And Huppert’s performance is quite good.  Rating: 7
