The Man Who Would Be King

Posted by martinteller on August 1, 2009

I always thought this movie was about either Jesus Christ or King Arthur, which shows how much I know.  No, it’s about two late 19th-century British scoundrels who decide to take over a region in or near Afghanistan… and find that their scheme works a little too well.  It works as a fun adventure, a statement on hubris, and a comic critique of imperialism.  The film’s successes are largely due to the winning performances by Sean Connery and Michael Caine, but Huston shows that he’s quite capable of directing an epic-style picture.  It didn’t sweep me off my feet, but it was a pretty good time and I have no complaints.  Rating: 8
