Ran (rewatch)

Posted by martinteller on May 7, 2010

This is, I think, my fifth time watching this movie.  I’ve always maintained that it’s a brilliant piece of work while never considering it among my favorites.  But tonight something just clicked.  First, I will say that the reviews are right: this is a very lackluster Blu-Ray, maybe the weakest-looking one in my collection.  But it’s probably the best we can hope for, at least for the time being.  And for the first time, the colors didn’t look wrong to me.  Maybe it didn’t bowl me over with hi-def gloriousness, but it still looks beautiful.  On previous viewings the performances, particularly Nakadai, rubbed me the wrong way, but now they seem entirely appropriate.  Or perhaps I’ve seen it enough times to become used to it.  There are still a couple of moments that feel a bit overdone, but only a couple.  It’s easily the best of Kurosawa’s post-Mifune films (which isn’t actually saying much).  Rich layers of Shakespearean drama, heaps of tragedy, a cast of characters who resonate, two hugely impressive battles, scenes that are unforgettable, and one of the most haunting final shots ever.  Truly a masterpiece, it’s now bounced into my top 5 Kurosawas… knocking off The Bad Sleep Well, and subsequently fucking up my previous assertion that I generally like his contemporary films more than his period pieces.  Rating: 10
