The Exorcist (rewatch)

Posted by martinteller on October 9, 2010

It’s been so long since I’ve watched this, I’d forgotten what a damn good movie it is.  Oh, I hadn’t forgotten what happens in it, not after 4 or 5 previous viewings.  I found myself looking forward to certain scenes and small moments.  But watching it now I was aware of how well-crafted it is.  From the haunting opening scenes of Father Merrin uncovering the demon to the final reflective moment of Father Dyer, it’s all very gripping with tension throughout, not just during the exorcism (less than 20 minutes of the whole film) but in all the build-up as well.  Some of it does come off as a bit cheesy now… the make-up in particular is overdone.  But still one of the best horror movies around.  Rating: 9
