A Serious Man (rewatch)

Posted by martinteller on March 9, 2011

I wasn’t sure what to make of this movie after the first viewing.  I felt like it didn’t leave an impression.  But after a while it kept coming back to me, popping into mind from time to time.  And then, while going through old episodes of the Filmspotting podcast, I listened to the one with Michael Stuhlbarg and that did it for me.  I suddenly felt like I had to see it again.  So what the heck, I bought the Blu-Ray.  It clicked a lot better with me this time, to the point where it’s now one of my favorites by the Coens.  It just seems so beautifully constructed, like the perfect meditation on the unknowability of the universe, a metaphysical comedy.  Although there’s some wonderfully funny moments, it’s not the most entertaining movie to watch.  But the gestalt of it is so fascinating, the little connections and references and details.  What perfect casting too, and great music and cinematography as well.  Embrace the mystery.  Rating: 9
