The Departed (rewatch)

Posted by martinteller on December 12, 2011

Wow, it’s hard to believe it’s been nearly 5 years since I first saw this.  Time flies, huh?  In the interim, I’ve read a lot of comments from people who feel this was a pretty weak Scorsese film and I thought maybe I had overrated it the first time around.  I had even convinced myself that it wasn’t that good and hesitated to buy the Blu-Ray.  Finally I took the plunge during a sale, and I’m glad I did.  It still holds up beautifully.  An absolutely gripping, labyrinthine series of inversions and deceptions, suspenseful as heck with excellent performances, and some compelling themes of identity and loyalty.  Mind you, I still haven’t seen the original (Infernal Affairs) and I feel kind of guilty about that.  Hopefully I’ll get to it soon.  It’ll be hard not to make comparisons, though, because I enjoy this film so much.  Rating: Great
