My Name Is Julia Ross (rewatch)

Posted by martinteller on February 18, 2012

For the four films in the “Columbia Film Noir Classics III” collection that I’ve seen before, I’m not going to write very much.  I’ve written about them before and all in the past couple of years, I don’t have much new to add.  So these reviews will be short and sweet.  Short and sweet, like My Name Is Julia Ross, a wonderful game of cat-and-mouse clocking in at just over an hour.  Lewis keeps turning the tables, constantly shifting the balance in a battle of wills between Julia and her captors.  The swift running time is used economically, with nary a second wasted on superfluous scenes, and yet tension is still maintained.  You never feel like you’re rushing towards the conclusion.

One has to be willing to accept a few implausibilities, and there are moments where you feel like Julia (Nina Foch in a good but somewhat plain performance) isn’t trying hard enough.  As in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? I was frustrated that she didn’t at least make a second attempt to get a note to the outside world.  And really, that gate looks like it’s pretty easy to climb.  But with a little willing suspension of disbelief (or even just making a few allowances for not very bright characters) it’s a terribly fun bit of entertainment, with some delightfully twisted antagonists.  Rating: Very Good
