Yearly Roundup – 1996

The Cream of the Crop

A sneak peek at my upcoming top 100, with three very strong contenders for the list.  Mohsen Makhmalbaf’s brilliantly meta A Moment of Innocence is one I recently revisited and fell in love with all over again.  Likewise, a second look at Secrets & Lies last month sealed its status as my favorite by director Mike Leigh, with astonishing performances and wholly engrossing family dynamics.  Speaking of favorites, I’m pretty sure Fargo still reigns as my top film by the Coens, a wonderful blend of comedy and suspense, highlighted by their typically unique outlook on the American culture and psyche.

Slightly Less Creamy, But Still Tasty

Stan Brakhage’s “Prelude” series is good stuff for fans of his hand-painted films, I especially like #7 and #12.  Mother Night is probably the best you could hope for from a Vonnegut adaptation.  With the Blu-Ray coming, I’ll soon be giving La Promesse a fresh look, but the first viewing left me quite satisfied, yet another stunning work by the Dardennes.  Drifting Clouds is a solid entry from Kaurismaki (and one I should revisit soon).  Makhmalbaf gives us another gem this year, the odd and poetic Gabbeh.  And speaking of odd, Soderbergh’s Schizopolis is probably his most off-the-wall movie, one that doesn’t always work but always does something intriguing.

Update 3/18/2014: got a couple more to add here, Leila and A Summer’s Tale.
