The Dark Mirror (rewatch)

Posted by martinteller on September 22, 2012

Ah, I’m the victim of my own old rating system.  When I saw this was being released on Blu-Ray, I looked up my old review to help me decide if it was worth buying.  I had given it an 8/10, which for noir is sufficient for a purchase.  So I bought it.  But if I’d double-checked my Criticker rating, I’d have seen I gave it an 80/100, which is a very low 8 indeed.

Of course, they’re just numbers, but if I’d simply remembered the movie better I would have recalled how silly it is.  Not in an entirely bad way — the film is a lot of fun and has an impressive double performance by De Havilland — however, it’s not the kind of thing I’d watch over and over again.  I didn’t mind watching it a second time, but I think that’ll probably be enough.  It doesn’t have much of a noir punch to it, and although it’s quite an enjoyable lark, it still doesn’t do much beyond exploiting the twin gimmick.

As far as the particulars, my old review will suffice.  I am adjusting my score slightly, though.  Rating: Good (77)
