Yearly Roundup – 1984

The Cream of the Crop

Of course it’s impossible to say what I’ll like 5, 10, 20 years from now.  But I can’t imagine a time when I would ever bump Stop Making Sense off my top 100 list.  I loved this music 25-30 years ago, and I still love it today.  But I don’t even think loving the music is a requirement for loving the film, which is such an exuberant, energetic and captivating document of a killer show.  It’s the rare film that I’m never not in the mood to watch.

Slightly Less Creamy, But Still Tasty

Comedies suffer most from overfamiliarity, so I’m afraid This Is Spinal Tap no longer delivers the laughs that it used to, but it certainly entertained me for years and holds a special place in my heart.  Amadeus throws historical accuracy out the window to provide a wonderfully enjoyable film about artistic ambition and envy.  Despite some occasional meandering, Love Streams is one of Cassavetes’s most powerful works, with phenomenal performances.  Threads stands as one of the most chilling nuclear nightmares, almost unbearably bleak.  And on the documentary front, Teshigahara’s almost entirely wordless Antonio Gaudi lets the architect’s brilliant creations speak for themselves.

Update 3/19/2014: The documentary Streetwise is also superb.

The “Uncharted Territory” here is especially good, but among them I really have to recommend Buckaroo Banzai: one of the great cult films, convoluted but incredibly inventive, funny, and memorable.

The adaptation of 1984 from this year also looks very good from what I’ve seen; it’s hard to imagine a more perfect Winston Smith than John Hurt.
