Prometheus

I’m not going to spend much effort writing about this.  It has 575 external reviews on IMDb, and over 1800 user reviews.  There are reams of discussion, surely picking apart every conceivable aspect of the film.  Whatever I have to say would be a drop in the bucket, and chances are if you had any interest in it, you’ve seen it already.  I don’t have any strong feelings about the movie anyway.  The film is very good in its craftsmanship.  The visuals are often astonishing, with incredible special effects and intriguing design inspired by Giger’s work on the original.  Really, the film looks fantastic.  The horror/suspense sequences are effective, and the surgery scene is one of the more unsettling things I’ve seen recently.  It’s a generally very watchable piece of entertainment and spectacle, with a few compelling elements.  But it all feels rather muddled and unfocused, sloppy in its construction as it searches for a point to make.  There also isn’t an interesting or even particularly likable character in the bunch.  Seeing Idris Elba gives me a powerful yearning to rewatch “The Wire”, though.  Rating: Fair (63)

I honestly quite liked Idris Elba’s character, and found Michael Fassbender engaged, although A: not to the degree nearly everyone seems to have, and B: I found the Lawrence of Arabia allusions decidedly unnecessary. I need to see this one again, but my opinion at the time was that it started great but kind of went to pieces in the last 20 minutes.

    • I’d say it goes to pieces about EVERY 20 minutes, the film doesn’t ever seem to know what it’s about. Elba is alright, but more because he’s Idris Fucking Elba than because of the character.
