Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (rewatch)

Posted by martinteller on October 21, 2012

There is something of a formula to Wallace & Gromit, and structurally this is rather similar to “A Close Shave”.  But as with most comedy teams, the joy is seeing the familiar chemistry you love in different settings.  This one is a delightful sendup of the classic monster movies, spoofing and borrowing from the Wolfman, Frankenstein and King Kong.  It takes the W&G blend of slapstick, sight gags and action/adventure, and throws a little horror into the mix.

The feature-length format doesn’t pose much of a problem, the jokes are spread slightly thinner but it’s still consistently enjoyable.  Ralph Fiennes and Helena Bonham Carter jump right into the spirit of it, voicing their characters with an aristocratic goofiness that’s not too goofy.  The score is wonderful as well, also paying tribute to the old gothic chillers.

I don’t know why this isn’t on Blu-Ray yet, the shorts collection proved how fantastic Aardman’s animation can look in high definition.  Rating: Great (90)
