Stroszek (rewatch)

Posted by martinteller on April 10, 2013

My first time watching this movie, nearly 10 years ago, I was underwhelmed.  A few years later I revisited it and took back some of my initial complaints but still wasn’t in love with it.  I had hoped the third time would be the charm for me and Stroszek.  It certainly gets a lot of love.  The late Roger Ebert was one of its strongest champions, and at least one of my closest friends adores it.

Alas, it was not to be.  I pretty much stand by my previous review.  I think it’s a fine film with some memorable scenes, but as a whole it just doesn’t grab me that much.  Maybe it’s Bruno S.’s performance.  His odd delivery suits Kaspar Hauser to a tee, a character whose upbringing is so alien that he has to feel entirely out of step with the rest of the world.  For Bruno Stroszek, even though the role was especially written for him, he’s too far out there.  I can’t connect to him sufficiently to establish the empathy required.

And that ending — though it’s the most fascinating, Herzogian part of the film — still grates on my nerves.  My cat, however, was utterly transfixed by it.  Rating: Good (75)
