Dedictví aneb Kurvahosigutntag (The Inheritance or Fuckoffguysgoodday)

Bohus (Bolek Polívka) is a good-for-nothing layabout, who lives with his elderly aunt (Anna Pantuckova), slacks off on the job, and drinks himself silly constantly.  One day an attorney (Miroslav Donutil) arrives with news… Bohus has just inherited a huge sum of money and property.  With the flustered attorney in tow (and footing the bills until the legalities are taken care of), Bohus paints the town red.  He also falls in love with a prostitute named Irena (Sárka Vojtková)… much to the consternation of his barmaid girlfriend Vlasta (Dagmar Havlová).

For the first hour, this is a pretty obnoxious comedy.  The story and screenplay were written by Polívka, and it feels like an opportunity for him to act like a buffoon.  It’s painfully annoying watching him flaunt his new attitude, especially when it comes to things like tricking his unsuspecting new employees into giving him bad service so he can give them a dressing down.  I imagine the point of the film is to show the uglier side of Czechoslovakia’s newfound capitalism, but it’s not very funny and usually irritating.

Things get a little better in the second half, but they don’t get good.  Just more tolerable.  I confess that part of the reason I liked this part more is because Vojtková is ridiculously hot.  But regardless, it’s not a particularly enjoyable movie.  There’s almost none of the daring inventiveness that Chytilova showed in Daisies, only in the very end does the story take a surreal (and ultimately confrontational) turn.

This is apparently a big cult hit in its native country.  My understanding is that much of the humor is verbal, relying on certain clever turns of phrase that Polívka uses in a particular accent.  This is of course lost on an American like me.  All I can say is that I was generally disappointed.  Rating: Poor (52)

    • Thanks for commenting. I did try to make it clear that my unfamiliarity with the country and the culture probably made it harder for me to enjoy this. It’s just one person’s opinion, but it may be valuable to someone.
