I was going to do a proper review, but sorry… again, just not in the mood.  So, another quickie.  I’ve seen a number of very solid noirs from director Edward Dmytryk, but this western ranks among his very best.  A dynamite cast was assembled, featuring Richard Widmark (in one of his most interesting performances), Henry Fonda, Anthony Quinn, Dorothy Malone, DeForest Kelley and Dolores Michaels, among others.  The plot is sometimes overly familiar, but very dense with complex psychology and relationships.  The co-dependent bond between Fonda and Quinn is particularly intriguing.  Rather weak score, but beautiful color photography of the rugged Moab landscape by Joe MacDonald (who has some spectacular noir credits of his own).  Short on action, but the drama is nuanced and very thoughtful for the genre.  Rating: Very Good (83)

I quite enjoyed this one. It seems to be generally considered an overlooked film, which I think is fair…it’s not a masterpiece, but I think it’s as least as good as, say, STAGECOACH.
