Boy Meets Girl

Posted by martinteller on August 15, 2013

Leos Carax’s debut feature certainly hints at the greatness to come: lovely and memorable moments, stunning cinematography, the exceptionally watchable face of Levant, and exciting use of music (Dead Kennedys and, once again, Bowie).  It’s an interesting mood piece with flashes of brilliance.  But on the whole I found it too scattershot and indulgent, and Carax seems to be trying too hard to channel early Godard.  I didn’t hate it, but I like all of his subsequent films more.  Rating: Good (71)

Denis Lavant was young once? That’s hard to believe.
