Iblard Jikan

Posted by martinteller on April 24, 2014

A mere curiosity from Studio Ghibli.  It’s 30 minutes of paintings by Naohisa Inoue, depicting the world of “Iblard”.  The pictures are certainly pretty, with an impressionistic style and a striking color palette reminiscent of Monet.  But this is really the cinematic equivalent of Muzak.  The animations do very little to liven things up and at times they even look cheaply done.  The world of Iblard is lovely, but not terribly interesting to study… it looks like a bunch of nice places to visit, with the occasional random geological oddities you typically see in sci-fi artwork.  Likewise, the score by Kiyonori Matsuo is pleasant, but doesn’t do much to help the film escape the “Muzak” analogy.  This movie feels like it should be playing in the waiting room of a dentist’s office.  If you’re not a diehard Inoue fanatic or a Ghibli completist, don’t waste your time.  Rating: Poor (47)
