The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Posted by martinteller on August 13, 2014

After the events of the first film, we rejoin Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) thrust back into the arena as the nefarious President Snow (Donald Sutherland) tries to squash a growing rebellion.  Mentor Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson) tries to provide guidance but… uh…

What. The. Fuck.  Is up with that chick’s face?  Is that like… half a fencing mask being held on with duct tape?  What…why?  What purpose does that serve?  And what is she doing there?  Is she like a waitress or something?  Is the tapey masky thing supposed to signify her silence, that she won’t repeat what she hears in that room?  Or is just more of that zany futuristic fashion?  It’s… it’s fucking weird.

Ahem.  Anyway.  Yeah, this is a little better than the first movie.  Notwithstanding our little friend up there, there’s less nonsense and more substance.  I still think the action sequences can be too confusingly choreographed, and Peeta is such bland deadweight that I never cared what happened to him.  But there’s some solid entertainment here, and it serves the purpose of keeping me interested in the next entry in the series.  Rating: Good (73)
