Monster in a Box (rewatch)

Posted by martinteller on January 24, 2015

Last time I watched this (wow, 8 years ago? where does the time go?) I mostly ended up stacking it against Swimming to Cambodia and finding it lacking.  Which I don’t think is unfair or untrue, but this is a still a pretty captivating and entertaining monologue, if you’re into Gray’s style.  Nick Broomfield’s handling of the camera and lighting is comparable to Demme’s… it’s neither completely hands-off nor overshadowing the performer, but in a comfortable middle ground.  Laurie Anderson’s score isn’t quite as good, but it’s fine.  There are some really good stories here, especially about Gray’s struggles to write (although to be honest the novel he ended up putting out is pretty forgettable).  Man, I miss Spalding Gray.  Rating: Very Good (85)
