Two Weeks With Love

Posted by martinteller on January 6, 2012

Jane Powell playing a teenager on the verge of womanhood again, but a nice improvement over Nancy Goes To Rio.  The plot for the most part is very charming, with Powell lusting after a dashing Ricardo Montalban.  There’s some pretty good comedy and a fair bit of innuendo, although all the fretting about corsets was probably too far removed from contemporary culture even for a 1950 audience.  Powell gets a couple of limp ballads, but otherwise the song selection is quite enjoyable, especially “Oceana Roll” and “Aba Daba Honeymoon”.  The dancing is top-notch as well, with the numbers produced by Busby Berkeley (although lacking his signature wild style).  The supporting cast is quite fun, with special mention for Debbie Reynolds, who steals the show every second she’s on screen with her ebullient energy and song and dance chops.  I really need to check out more of her work… while I’m guessing Singin’ in the Rain is her finest hour, there’s bound to be a couple of gems elsewhere in her filmography.  A few dud moments aside, an entertaining picture.  Rating: Good
