Blue Velvet (rewatch)

Posted by martinteller on July 17, 2005

Lynch divides the world sharply into good and evil — those are those who are infallibly good and those who are unredeemably evil.  Only the Dorothy Vallens character straddles the line, her essential goodness corrupted by prolonged exposure to Frank Booth and his underworld cronies.  The robins/bugs symbolism is a little too in-your-face, although I think Jeffrey posing as an exterminator to gain entrance into Vallens’ world is a nice touch.  You could say that Dennis Hopper’s performance is over the top, but I think that would be missing the point.  Lynch is deliberately dealing with extremes, with Frank Booth on one end of the spectrum and Sandy on the other.

Blue Velvet doesn’t run terribly deep, but it’s always an interesting journey, both unsettling and amusing.  Rating: 9
